Remedial and Sports massage treats a comprehensive range of conditions and injuries which can be encountered in either the clinical or sporting environment.

The objectives of Remedial Massage are to:

  • reduce pain
  • increase range of movement
  • restore appropriate balance

The objectives of Sports Massage are to:

  • reduce pain
  • increase range of movement
  • restore appropriate balance

    AND

  • support the sportsperson during training
  • enhance athletic performance
  • reduce the risk of re-injury

The Diploma in Remedial and Sports Massage course provides in-depth practical tuition in both Remedial and Sports massage by building on Swedish massage methods as well as introducing a wide range of highly effective techniques. These include:

  • advanced consultation skills and appropriate safety checks
  • assessment procedures to accurately identify conditions and injuries
  • myofascial, neuromuscular and muscle energy techniques (MET)
  • trigger point therapy
  • proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)
  • stretching
  • active, passive and resisted movements
  • joint and spinal mobilisation techniques

The treatment of many common disorders and injuries is covered along with a specific module dedicated specifically to Sports Event Massage - working with athletes in competition and training.

Further study in relevant Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology accompanies the extensive 'hands-on' sessions ensuring the student gains the necessary experience to practise successfully in both the remedial and sports fields.

Comprehensive course notes with detailed photographic instructions on practical techniques enhance the learning experience.

Assessment
Award of the diploma is based on a process of continuous assessment throughout the course, home exercises, final oral, written and practical examinations and the completion of formal case studies.

Entry requirements
Recognised Diploma in Swedish massage, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu or equivalent. These must have included an appropriate module in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.

Course Duration
Nine weekends over a nine month period. (130 contact teaching hours)
