Diploma in Swedish Massage

A comprehensive and effective introduction to massage therapy. This course is suitable for students

  • who wish to massage their family and friends safely or
  • who are already in the healthcare field and wish to add to their skills or
  • who wish to set up in practice as a therapist.

It can be looked upon as a stand-alone course or as the entry requirement to more advanced massage therapy training.

The Diploma is a professionally accredited qualification - allowing the graduate to gain professional indemnity insurance and to go straight into practice on gaining his or her diploma.

Swedish Massage is so named because it was a Swedish fencing master and gymnast, Henrik Ling, who instigated the use of techniques such as Effleurage, Friction, Petrissage, Tapotement and Percussion in the format that is most widely used in massage therapy in the West today. Swedish Massage focuses on the musculo-skeletal system, reducing muscle spasm and relieving pain. As well as affecting each of the physiological systems of the body, it also has the psychological effect of inducing relaxation.

The course provides a thorough grounding in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology coupled with extensive ‘hands-on’ massage experience.

A First Aid course and certificate are also included as part of the Swedish massage course. A current First Aid certificate is a legal requirement to practice as a therapist.

On the business side, Practice Development – how to start and run your own therapy practice - is included to give the successful student the skills needed to succeed as a therapist.

The course meets and exceeds the curriculum requirements set for Swedish Massage by the General Council for Massage Therapy.

Assessment:
Award of the diploma is based on a process of continuous assessment throughout the course, home exercises, final oral, written and practical examinations and the completion of formal case studies.

Course Duration:
Nine weekends over a nine month period. (130 contact teaching hours)
